We're All About the Story
Welcome to Poppy's!
Here's a look at our sweet little shop in Meadows of Dan, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Our summer hours are 10 AM to 6 PM, seven days a week. In the winter we do cut back our hours to Friday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm.
In 2005 I opened a little book store in this quaint little building at 10 Concord Road under the name Greenberry House. My partner and I had antiquarian and used books and lots of vintage items crammed into two rooms of the shop as the landlord had an apartment set up in the back of the building. I also had a small corner of the shop for my handspun yarns and for spinning fiber. Eventually the yarn overwhelmed a lot of the shop and we became a yarn and book store. Life got complicated and due to changes and deaths, I had to move out of the shop in 2011.
Fast forward eight years, after moving the shop several times, I'm back to the little place at the corner of Concord Road and Squirrel Spur Road! The shop has a new name, Poppy's, and has expanded with wonderful lines of gifts, alpaca products, vintage items and I still have books and locally produced yarns and spinning fibers.

Many of our products are sourced from local artisans and makers, and we pride ourselves on providing high-quality and one-of-a-kind items that you won't find anywhere else. My quality book selection is extensive and I continue to add more titles. I have everything from fiction to children's books to books on religion and folklore, but my specialty is biography and history. Some inexpensive editions of some popular children's titles featuring the Boxcar Children, Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden are often available here at the shop. We never know quite what the next box will add to the selection.
Recently we expanded the book area and have added collectible postcards, vintage photographs including CDVs, cabinet cards and stereoviews and a fine selection of autographs and documents. Resident expert Beth Almond Ford keeps the postcards well stocked and interesting, and they are a great collectible at a reasonable price!
Our prices range from 50 cent and $2.00 paperbacks to the finest collectible first editions. We often say that people get lost in our book room, with all the titles to browse and the temptation of the boxes of postcards.
Our most recent addition, besides books that we add weekly, is a fine collection of matted photographs from a local estate sale.

Our "International Room" features quality alpaca items, carefully curated from the best fair-trade companies we can find. An alpaca favorite with customers is the luxurious socks, blended with stabilizing fibers for long lasting quality. We feature elegant alpaca shawls, scarves, gloves, warm sweaters, beautiful blankets and throws, fun keychains, and unique plush animals.
We also have specialty purses, fine felted soaps, handmade felted pins, and a selection of Leslie's fine handmade shawls, hats and fingerless mitts. A fun new line for us is "Save the Girls" clip and go lanyards with a small zippered purse that turn your cell phone case into a crossbody carrier. We especially like these because sales help support breast cancer research. Many of our companies are ethically sourced and/or support various causes.
Greenberry House still lives on in my handspun yarns and spinning fibers. I have about twelve other spinners in the area that sell their yarns through the shop as well. We also have two alpaca farms in the area that produce amazing spinning fiber and beautiful yarns. Our yarns are amazing for the simplest projects and the fine wools, which are not harshly processed like some commercial wools, are next to the skin soft. With the closing of several yarn shops in our area, we have expanded our selection to include wool, cotton, acrylic and alpaca yarns from the best commercial producers we could locate. We sometimes have a few fleeces for processing, and we also have roving or batts of wool or alpaca. Great for hand spinning or felting.
Our yarn room is also the location for our Tuesday Stitch 'n Chat group that meets weekly at 5:30. I often say we have the nicest group ever and everyone is glad to share and pitch in to help each other and newcomers. All are welcome!

An eclectic blend of old and new, vintage and unique, will greet you when you come into Poppy's. Our marvelous designers offer interesting gifts that are either fair trade or American made and many are hand made as well. We have a nice selection of jewelry, vintage pieces, beautiful note cards, entertaining magnets, wonderful woodwork and specialty items by our local talented seamstresses, felted mobiles and other toys for kids, fragrant and massage oils, and much more. We even have some fun nostalgic candy!
